Seamus and the Ice Cream Sandwich

By Karl Bickerstaff

Seamus stared at the hundred dollar bill on the table in front of him. What to do with it? He wasn’t very good at converting between wizard money and normal money in his head, but he figured it was a decent amount.

Suddenly, a hand swept out of nowhere and snatched the bill from the table. Seamus, startled, looked up.

“Barney Barkstrop,” he said.

Barney looked down at him. “Whatcha doing with all this non-wizard money, Seamus? Who’d you steal it from?”

“I didn’t–”

“Knew you would come around eventually,” interrupted Barney. “I mean, I don’t see how any decent wizard can stand around and let the non-wizards run the whole place.”

“Last time we tried to take–” began Seamus, but he was interrupted again.

“If it weren’t for the Enforcers,” continued Barney, “I’d say some of us could have gotten to the top by now, made it into the government as wizards, not hiding like the ones in there now.”

Seamus slowly and quietly pulled his wand out from his sleeve, hidden under the table.

“I think you should give that back to me, Barney,” he said.

“Why? Whatcha gonna do to make me?” sneered Barney. “You wanna’ duel? I’ll duel a Wind Wizard any day.”

He yanked his own wand out of his pocket and pointed it at Seamus. Seamus sighed. “Fine. Have it your own way.”

Suddenly, he leaped up from the table. “Ice cream sandwich!” he shouted, knowing that this was the one thing that Barney liked better than picking fights. Barney whirled around, looking for the succulent dessert. Seamus spun his wand around and flicked it at the bill. A sharp breeze sent it flying out of Barney’s hand and toward Seamus. Barney, realizing what he had fallen for, turned angrily and raised his own wand. Seamus shrugged.

“There really was a sandwich, Barney, you just didn’t look hard enough,” he said as the bill blew into his hand.
